Piercing
Piercing Materials: Titanium, Surgical Steel and Bioplast
Updated: 8 October 2026
The material of your jewellery directly affects how you heal. We use three main materials in the studio:
Titanium
Because it is biocompatible and nickel-free, titanium is a first-class material for medical implants and for piercings. It is noticeably lighter than steel jewellery (by about 50%). Since it carries the lowest risk of an allergic reaction, it is especially recommended for a first piercing.
316L surgical steel
Surgical steel piercing jewellery should only be made from 316L alloy steel. Its nickel content should be 0.01% mg/cm², a level that complies with EU and Turkish nickel regulations.
Unfortunately, cheaper, lower-quality steel piercings are also on the market, and they greatly increase the risk of an allergic reaction in those who wear them. Because, unlike gold or silver, they carry no hallmark, they are very hard to tell apart. To be safe, our recommendation is always to use titanium for a first piercing.
Bioplast (PTFE)
Because its surface is extremely smooth, bioplast (polytetrafluoroethylene) stops foreign matter and wound fluid from sticking to it. That lets you get through the healing of a first piercing with minimal trouble.
- It is flexible. It is recommended especially for the tongue and lip, as it does not harm tooth enamel or gums.
- It is comfortable in areas that move. Its high mobility makes it comfortable in the navel, nipple and genital areas.
- It can be nearly invisible. Its transparent models give minimum visibility when you want it.
- It does not conduct electricity. It can stay in during surgery, X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. Using bioplast to protect a fresh piercing that risks closing lets you sit exams such as university entrance or the KPSS.
- It helps with keloids. With proper care, faster results are possible in keloid treatment.
In short: titanium for a first piercing; bioplast for sensitive and moving areas and for the keloid process. Surgical steel is safe only at the correct 316L standard.
